Balanced Connection

Three conductors that cancel noise over distance

A balanced connection uses three conductors (hot, cold, ground): the cold carries an inverted copy of the hot, and the receiver subtracts them, so common-mode noise cancels. It suits long runs and electrically noisy rooms.

It differs from unbalanced: two conductors cannot cancel noise and suit short runs. The usual mistake is to assume balanced always sounds better — its advantage is noise rejection and distance, not tone; for short, clean runs, unbalanced is perfectly adequate.
