Artist Royalty

The share of recording income a label pays to the recording artist

An artist royalty is the share a label pays the recording artist under contract, usually a percentage of net recording receipts. It differs from a song royalty: the latter comes from the composition, the former from the master. Producers and mixers may hold their own points, deducted from the same income.

The usual mistake is to multiply the rate by gross revenue: contracts often deduct packaging, distribution and marketing first, then require recoupment, and rates may differ across physical, download and streaming. Ask what the base is, which deductions apply, and whether the rate changes after recoupment.
