Advance

Money paid up front, later recovered from royalties

An advance is money a label or publisher pays the writer/artist on signing, later recovered from royalties earned. It is not a gift or a bonus but a loan against future income.

Its relation to royalties is often misunderstood: a big advance does not mean big income, only that the contract has paid future money early; if the work never recoups, the artist may see no further royalties for a long time. Ask the contract: how much, at what rate is it recouped, and what else is deducted before recoupment.
